The Oklahoma Transition Council acknowledges the traditional territories on which our contemporary educational system resides. These lands bear the rich histories, traditions, and stories of 39 distinct tribal nations who were associated with the forced relocation of Nations through the Indian Removal Act of 1830. During this time hundreds of thousands of Native children were removed from their families and tribes; forced to attend government boarding schools these actions continued until the mid-1970s leaving families and whole cultures devastated; their pain and search for justice continues.
We honor the profound significance of these lands and their intricate connections to the people who call them home. As we move forward in our educational endeavors, we remain committed to recognizing their sovereign rights, ensuring that educational pathways not only respect but also celebrate and integrate the cultural values, histories, and aspirations of these tribes. Recognizing the historical injustices and atrocities faced by these Tribal Nations, we commit ourselves to fostering an educational environment that is culturally restorative guided by representation and leadership from within each nation ensuring that future generations know the truths of the past while working towards a more inclusive and equitable future.
If you are a Native leader who is interested in the Transitional outcomes of youth and students with disabilities in your community and would like to help ensure community inclusion please contact Oklahoma Transition Council.
In Oklahoma, transition age students are typically able to apply to both State VR Services, and Tribal VR Services
